Lt. Col. Jack D. Smith. His decorations included the Silver Star for helping the pilot of a crippled bomber return safety to base by lightening the plane's weight. He also received the Soldier's Medal for heroism.

Jack flew 26 combat missions during the Korean war and missions in support of the French in Vietnam.

Jack flew both fixed wing aircraft and helicopters.

Jack was John Morgan's first and only flight instructor. A good man and a dear friend.

Obituary from the San Bernardino County Sun (Dec 9, 2003): Jack Daniel Smith, 83, died Dec. 7, 2003, at Community Hospital of San Bernardino. He retired as Major from the USAF after 26 years of service, including WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. When retired he worked for Western Helicopter in Rialto, where he lived for 36 years. Survivors including his wife, Lorraine; son, Daniel of Alaska; daughters, Valerie Jean Smith of Bristol, TN, Jeanette Puglizevich of Merced, Bernadette Fish of Corona & Christine Sherman of Port Orchard, WA; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; brothers, Glenn Smith & Frank Petiti; and sisters, Helen Downall & Patricia Prouse, all of the San Francisco area. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Valerie, the mother of his 7 children; his oldest daughter, Jacqueline Ayars & youngest son, William Smith. Viewing will be Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, from 4-7 p.m. at Bobbitt Memorial Chapel, 1299 E. Highland Ave. , San Bernardino. Services will be Saturday, Dec 13, 2003 10 a.m. at Bobbitt Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at Montecito Memorial Park in Colton.
